District 7 is committed to cultivating a sustainable future from grapes to glass. From the start, our approach to environmental stewardship has embraced growing and producing wines in a way that is good for the environment, good for our community and good for our business.

The world we share needs us to be caretakers and we intend to do just that.

Certified Sustainable

Our winery and estate vineyards are Certified Sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), a statewide certification program that provides third-party verification of a winery’s commitment to sustainable winegrowing practices.

Wind Turbine Harnessing the Power of the Wind

We are proud to offer high quality wines that are made using environmentally conscious practices. Our winery is 100% powered by renewable wind energy from an on-site wind turbine that harnesses the power of Salinas Valley’s inexhaustible winds to generate an impressive amount of clean energy. Not only does this sustainable power source fuel our wine production but it also annually supplies power to over 150 homes in our local community.

Since its construction in 2017, our 1.85-megawatt wind turbine has:

  • generated over 32.8 million kWh/year

  • offset over 24.2 tons of C02 emissions

The amount of renewable power produced is equivalent to:

  • Taking 642 vehicles off the road each year

  • 123 homes’ electricity use per year

Sustainable Growing

We believe the best wines come from healthy vines. Being a sustainable wine grower means being thoughtful stewards of the environment and caretaking the health of our land for generations to come. We do this through low impact farming methods, water conservation and integrated pest management.

Winery

In addition to the wind turbine, our state-of-the-art winery is designed to minimize our impact through waste reduction and efficient energy use.

  • Energy Efficiency

    • Winery and bottling operations are powered by renewable wind energy
    • Utilization of lights with automatic sensors and tanks with insulated jackets to reduce heating and cooling energy needs
  • Water Conservation

    • 100% of our winery water is recycled through our irrigation ponds for reuse in our vineyards
    • Through recycling, we use 50% less water than a typical winery of our size

Additional Certifications

In addition to being Certified Sustainable by the CSWA, all of our vineyards hold third-party certifications from:

  • GlobalG.A.P.

GlobalG.A.P. Certification (Good Agricultural Practice) is an internationally recognized system that sets standards to ensure safe and sustainable agricultural practices and ensure product safety, environmental responsibility and the health, safety and welfare of workers. We became the first GlobalG.A.P. certified vineyard in the USA in November 2015.

  • BRC British Retail Consortium

BRC is arguably the most rigorous, internationally accepted standard for food safety. With 25,000 auditors in 130+ countries, BRC is among a small group of accreditations recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative which defines best practices to ensure food safety for consumers. We have consistently received audits with a grade of ‘A’ year over year since our first audit in December 2016.
